Your True Identity

This is not my normal style of writing, but is something that the Lord has impressed upon me over the past few days.  This past Sunday a guest at our church spoke on identity, specifically how we have an enemy whose goal is to take it.  As I prayed through what to discuss in our home group a couple of days later, the Lord told me to make sure we all understood what our identity actually is.

Here are some pieces of the identity of those of us who have accepted Jesus Christ as Lord of our lives.  You can rest in these, friend.  There is no debating these characteristics…this is who you are!

You are a child of God

John 1:12 “But to all who did receive Him, who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.”

You are a friend of Jesus

John 15:15 – “No longer do I call you servant, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.”

You are justified

Romans 3:24 – “…and are justified by His grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.”

You are not a slave of sin

Romans 6:6 – “We know that our old self was crucified with Him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.”

You have been set free

Romans 8:2 – “For the law of the spirit of life has set you free from the law of sin and death.”

You are accepted by Christ

Romans 15:7 – “Therefore accept one another as Christ has accepted you, for the glory of God.”

You are a temple of the Holy Spirit

1 Corinthians 6:19 – “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God?”

You are a new creation

2 Corinthians 5:17 – “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ he is a new creation.  The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”

You have been made one with Christ

Galatians 3:28 – “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”

You are chosen, holy and blameless

Ephesians 1:4 – “Even has He chose us in Him before the foundations of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before Him.”

You are redeemed and forgiven

Ephesians 1:7 – “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace.”

You are sealed with the Holy Spirit

Ephesians 1:13 – “In Him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in Him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit.”

If you read these and have not accepted Christ, these too can be part of your identity!  Simply ask God right now to be the Lord of your life.  Acknowledge to Him that you have tried life your way and have failed, and that you need a Savior.  Ask Him to take over your life and commit to following Him the rest of your days.

  1. Excellent and Biblical. Good work, Tyler. What a great way to help the people you shepherd to see the practical application of the teaching. Good job. Blessings
